"After being away for some years as a conscious social reference, it seems that the "God" referent is coming back into focus. Thus the need for Jim Schenk's fascinating collection of briefly-worded ideas about God from a wide array of thinkers, activists, and artists. Most amazing is the variety of ways in which the divine makes itself known to human consciousness, as manifest in this challenging volume." |

ELDERS AS EARTH KEEPERS Elders involved with Imago, Inc. programs have developed an interactive discussion course focused on the role of elders in our culture and their responsibilities as keepers of the earth. They were drawn to this project given the growing numbers of healthy financially stable early retirees and the evidence of ecological disaster we face as a species. This study course is intended for adult groups, men and women over 50 years old, who are: The course consists of five group directed discussion sessions, during which you will consider the views of selected authors. The study course explores the possibilities of how elders can participate in restoring and renewing the Earth and the human community. The course encourages older adults to use their gifts and experience as leaders in addressing the threats to the planet. These readings have been chosen to provide discussable perspectives on the Earth and the role of elders. Whether you agree or disagree with an author, you have the opportunity to clarify your values. In the process you will learn a great deal from yourself and fellow attendees, and are guaranteed to have fun. In creating this study course we have followed the format used by the Northwest Earth Institute. We have also added suggestions for further study and ideas for activating your role as an Earth Elder. Produced by: Bob Staggenborg, Joyce Quinlan, Jim Schenk, Carol Hunter, Jan Sluder and Gisela Bahr. The course is sent unbound so the final chapter can be adjusted to your own setting if you would like. The course can be put in a binder.

At a time when the old religious myths are leading us to war, speaking of Armageddon, and saying almost nothing about the destruction of the planet, this book is refreshing. It sees humans as a species of this Earth, a planet that is but a speck in the Milky Way Galaxy, which is one of billions of Galaxies in Universe. In this context, writers in this anthology grapple with the notion of how amazing God must be, the meaning of life, and what happens after death. Schenk says, “This book is looking at new metaphors and images coming from the new cosmology that has changed so rapidly over the past 50 years. The images of God, life and afterlife from the old cosmology are so detrimental to our planet, that new metaphors are essential for the survival of our planet, our human species, and the many other species that share this home with us.” This book comes out of Schenk’s theological background, combined with his deep love and connection to Earth. The significance of this book is its ability to connect us to the Universe, Galaxy and planet of which we are a part, and it allows us to see God, life and death in this unifying context. It excites our imagination, challenges us to think deeper. With prose, poetry, and art, this book opens up an array of ways of looking at God, at Life and at Death that helps us make sense of our lives, now, in this expanding Universe.
